For insurance agents
Thanking someone who sent you a referral
The thank-you is not the point. The point is telling them what happened to the person they sent, because that is the thing they are actually wondering about and nobody ever tells them.
When to send it
Within a day of the referral, and again when it closes.
What it has to do
- Names the person they sent.
- Says what happened — quoted, bound, still working on it.
- Says one specific thing about why it was a good fit, so they know what to look for next time.
- Offers something back, concretely.
What to avoid
- Offering a referral fee without knowing whether that is permitted for their licence and yours. In several states and professions it is not, and asking puts them in an awkward position.
- 'Let me know if I can ever return the favour.' Everybody says it, nobody acts on it. Name an actual person or type of client instead.
- Waiting until it closes. If it takes three weeks they have assumed you dropped it.
A worked example
Names and details here are invented. Written the way an agent would actually send it, not the way a template would.
Writing these every week?
ProducrIQ is a tool a working insurance agent built for his own agency. Describe the situation the way you’d say it to a colleague and it writes the message in your voice, signed by your agency — including this one, under Referral Thank You.
